Is gaming important?

Parents can give you hell for playing that extra hour of CS or spending the last of your pocket money on the new FPS from EA, but do they realise the importance of gaming?

To many it would seem like a retarded question, “Gaming is for kids with too much time”, would be their obvious retort, however times have changed. In India about 42% of gamers are adults between 20 and 30 and 14% are above 31 years of age. The reason why they game varies between self satisfaction to an effective stress buster. Reports have shown that gaming is educational, helps improve reflexes and concentration and might even get you a girlfriend in Korea but why would you spend so much time playing a game instead of reading a book, exercising or doing yoga?

The answer, if you go by Freudian logic, is that humans live for pleasure and as society evolves we shift from having to constantly think about survival to enjoying life. Work and play mix together and we end up enjoying what we do. Some people may even completely substitute work for something more fun, such as gaming. Already Pro Gamers and Pro Clans have sprung up around the world, and all they do is game to make a living.

Closer to home, gamers will get the same opportunity through some upcoming big ticket tourneys dedicated to drawing out the very best from among the hardcore gamers in India. A shortly approaching tourney is rumored to have over 64 short listed teams from across the country fighting it out for the top spot in Mumbai.

So is gaming important? Well in the future our professions will be a form of entertainment, gaming will evolve and encompass our lives and if you don’t believe me, well .. you’re going to get Pwned!
